In 2019 I made a commitment to develop my skills as a Mokuhanga printmaker. I initially received training from Adrian Holmes, and have since researched the history and techniques of the artform further.
Mokuhanga is a modern evolution of Ukiyo-e: the Japanese art of using small hand-chisels to carve away at a block of sidegrain wood. Traditionally, the printing process uses a mixture of nori paste, water and liquid pigment which is brushed onto each block. Moistened paper is then laid over the block and the pigment is transferred by applying pressure by hand using a small disc called a baren. For my prints so far, I have experimented with variations of traditional pigments, gouache and roller-based inks typically used in European woodcut printing.

Inara — 2020
A limited print run commissioned to celebrate the client's new family member. The name 'Inara' refers to the Hittite Goddess of the wild animals of the steppe. Depicted in this image is a longhorn ram, native to the lands of Anatolia that were once the Hittite homeland. The name also means "ray of light" in Arabic.
Reference for the form was taken from Hittite artifacts depicting animals such as cattle and stags.

Shirotora — 2019
Created mostly as a two-block layering and texture transmission experiment, Shirotora (white tiger) uses a combination of red gouache and black sumi ink.

Joy — 2019
This print celebrates queer joy and trans liberation. As a limited reduction print, the money raised by sales is donated to The Outside PRoject: an arganisation offering housing and support for queer homeless people in London.
